After hearing about how those cars that run on biodeisel are actually WORSE, I ran across this article about how bamboo may not be as ecofriendly as people think (as far as being made into trendy fabrics and clothing) because of the refining process:

This page is maybe the only one that gives a hint on how to compile with cc65 for NES. Thanks for that! But in the example, the atmos library is not needed, indeed, it shouldn't be linked for NES development. It does compile, but, the Atmos was a totally diferent computer: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oric_Atmos just that! good luck!

Having experienced first hand, many NGO, government aid, grants, ministries, working in developing countries, I agree. To many programs are donor created, with little or no respect to local conditions, culture, emergent needs, long term benifit, etc. I have experiened Haiti since 2006, lived and worked with the people. There are hundreds of groups here doing thousands of projects deemed to help Haiti....no organization of resources, most do not coordinate with government agencies or others.....the effect is tens of millions of dollars being spent on single projects with no thought as to "grand scale" and long term sustainability of improvements for society. Many years of assistance to Haiti has proven to be not much effective in improving life for the average Haitian. They are still with no jobs, starving from lack of food, living in dire conditions. Band aid, upon band aid, has been applied in Haiti......hundreds of millions of dollars.....with no concept of a optimum goal. Next door, in the Dominican Republic (on the same island) it looks like Las Vegas....compared to Haiti looking like what it is....the fourth poorest country in the world. We need logical, properly managed efforts to build sustainable society, not only in Haiti, but world wide. William H Vastine/17/01/09 Petion-ville, Haiti

I remember GEOS well on the C64 6510. SLOW slow slow. With no hardware interrupt to handle the mouse (joystick) movements, it bogged everything down. this, along with the fact that disk access was a 5.25 floppy.

I don't think that is was a lack of a controller interrupt that made the OS slow, since the 64 had other hardware interrupts that could have updated the mouse pointer. I don't specifically remember GEOS being really slow (though the 1541 disk drive was slow with any app), but it might have been slow relative to the Macintoshes that it would have been compared to at the time.
But there are other 8-bit point-and-click environments available. Some have actually been developed more recently, as open source projects.

This basic was originally developed for the MZ computer series from Sharp, sold mostly in Japan and Europe. A few small LCD machines from this line may have been sold in the United States. An English-language manual might be available from a British source, but it might not cover enhancements added to the language when it was ported to the Famicom.
It is also my understanding that some early American NES units had the expansion port on the main board, but the plastic case covered it.
Might it be better to use a public domain basic?

This is a great set of links! Thank you.
Right now, it would cost significantly more to use the c64DTV, but I'm looking into how we could drop the cost. We have a discussion of alternative platforms in our google group, here: http://groups.google.com/group/playpowertech/browse_thread/thread/a38e59df7c128b11

There is an actual GUI operating system that could probably be adapted to run on the Famicom; GEOS, originally designed for the Commodore 64, has had its source code released to the public domain. GEOS was similar in many ways to the early MAC OS, and it could run on an 8-bit machine with only 64k of memory. There was also an Apple-II version.
The Famicom's graphic hardware is a little different, and its instruction set is slightly stripped down from standard 6502, but I don't think that it would be impossible to port this OS. It could maybe be modernized to incorporate some newer features of current GUIs.
Another thing that this machine out to have is a flash-card slot. CompactFlash is probably the cheapest, but SD seems to be becoming the universal standard. If you don't support SD's built-in encryption (an almost never used feature) you don't have to pay licensing.

I don't know if the hardware design can be tweaked, but it would be helpful to have a wireless capability of some sort built-in. Being able to have e-books downloaded into the unit would be a great feature.
Another approach would be to use an external SD card for wireless, but then you're adding a $99USD card to at $12 computer. A 2G USB flash card costs around $10USD now, enough storage for hundreds of software applications.
The scalability issues are going to be software availability, based on how many people will want to develop the skills set for programming the device.
GEOS for the NES chip would be a good offering, but many NES/nbasic applications obviously aren't designed for it.
A LOGO language interpreter would help introduce Constructivist education approaches.
Compatibility with Commodore 64 or Apple ][ software would be helpful, but having a wireless networking capability built-in (perhaps using the Marvel chip used in the OLPC XO platform) would be useful, too.

I picture a much modified GUI OS based around bank switching of memory. The machine could have multiple NES programs in various banks, and an interrupt-based switcher would switch the GUI in and out, and allow switching between programs in different banks. IReally not all that different from an early Macintosh software enhancement that allowed switching between apps running on the primitive early version of MAC OS.

I want to think of something green which should not require rebuilding for atleast a decade. I am talking about the outer structure. I dont know about the feasability of the passive air conditioning when it comes to a rsort. I mean how many towers would one have to install? On the other hand i feel the grey water recycling is something which would be useful for a resort. I want to think something dramatically different for the swimming pool. What other ideas u got? And are you working on a related project somewhere?

Hey Guys,
Recently I've been working with some people from CalIT2 who have brought to light a particular technology that is pretty interesting. This particular technology is a website called wikimapia.org . This is a site where people can comment about anything based on a selected location on an interactive map (Think Google Earth). Users and add comments about things and ramble on about any particulars thats on their mind.
This is strangely already in use widely by many users in India. I was also thinking that this could be a great way to tack on some of our other ideas and make them more tangible by making it location specific. The generation of user content doesn't have to stop at comments left in particular parts of the wikimapia map. The asterisk application could use information grabbed by wikimapia to obtain information that can contribute to a survey or "happiness rating"
Since people are already using this widely couldn't a little more grease work bring wikimapia to a whole other level of usability and interaction?
