mobilization of laborThis is a featured page

This project describes how mobile phone technology could more efficiently organize India's laborforce.

The concept is essentially a voice based system for posting job descriptions and employee resumes. Think of it as a telephone-based craigslist. Freelancers (whether graphic designers or maids) call a number and state the type of work they do, and the amount they charge. People who need small jobs done could post a description of the work, and the amount they are willing to pay.

How it works

Users would be advertised to through various campaigns (posters, word of mouth, truck paintings). They would call a phone number and leave information about themselves, like their name, their location, age, and work experience. They would respond to surveys intended to determine the kind of work they are looking for. They could then listen through job postings that have been left by different employers. They would then receive occassional text messages or phone calls alerting them to jobs that match. In the meanwhile, employers looking for good employees could access a phone or web based interface that allowed them to listen to the voice resumes. They could then call any of these persons to ask further questions, and potentially hire them.

Feasibilty
A non-functional prototype of this application could be built relatively easily using flash. A working prototype could be built using Asterisk, an open source phone system software.

Accountability Systems
Users would be able to rate employers, and employers would be able to rate users (because their phone number would be the same), giving accountability to work conditions.

Other uses
Users could be advertised other resources, such as english language training or other adult classes. They could be offered over-the-phone advice in manners, dress, and their rights on the job.

One of the most commonly cited problems holding back India is the lack of infrastructure. India needs roads, public transportation systems, wells, pipes, sewers, electrical lines, hospitals, and schools. At the same time, there are millions people looking for employment.

1. Check unemployment rate
2. Check stats on labor shortage
