Introduction:
-possibility of setting up a CALIT in India
Leader presentations:
-Sneha: Medicine cold box and the engineering design process
Satellife: PDA medical publications
-James: Simputer
Reflection Pieces:
-How can we contribute to future iterations of this class?
-How did you find the first assignment?
-The kind of class, improvements.....
Discussion:
-Designing for the poor vs. middle class
- is it better to design for the aboslute poorest of a country who will probably not appreciate this technology when they cant even meet basic needs?
- would it be better to design for the middle class of india which is so much greater...would have more of an impact
- what exactly is poor? how do we determine it?
-if we go strictly by numbers and income, over 80% would be considered "poor"
-however if we go by markers (possesion of cellphone, car, tv, computer....) may be more accurate.
(I argue what if you're afraid of technology but have a lot of money?)
- Must look at usage rather than technology: human aspect and needs assessment:
Photograph example:
-Kodak affiliate went to stay with family and found the importance of pictures--> pushed digital photography
- must get into the mind of the people you're designing for using existing ecology to design
ethnography: studying culture
- how can we expect people to organize computer files into folders when they have never put anything into manual folders?
-Iterative design: must get your project into the field to realize usage to make modifications
- designing knowing there will be a second version (ipod)
