Many villages in India suffer from little or no electrical access. This lack of electricity is a significant barrier to the rural adoption of mobile telephony. We therefore designed an inexpensive device that can charge mobile phones using power derived from a foot-powered sewing machine.



Background
In India it is very common for people to purchase cloth, and have their clothes made by a tailor, even in remote rural areas. Old fashioned 'foot powered' sewing machines are therefore very common, and available for as little as $30.
