Malini Vangipuram

Hello! My name is Malini. I am a 4th year microbiology student. Like many others, I am interested in applying my major in developing a technology that will be of use to third world countries. I was born in India and I moved to Amercia when I was 9-10 years old. So I can relate to some of issues/problems faced in third world nations. My region of interest is India, Pakistan, Bangladesh...basically Southeast Asia.

I am very much interested in the health sector of India. The Indian government spends very less money on health and nearly 75% of Indian doctors reside in the cities. These two factors contribue to a huge inequality in the heath-care distribution. The difference in the rural-urban healthcare is enormous. I want to help lessen this gap. I am interested in technologies that focus on sanitation, enabling more patient-doctor consults and basically getting people in the third world nations to care about their health.

I am very fascinated by the new "Telemedicine" technology that has come up in India. It allows people living in remote villages to get consults from expert surgeons and doctors living in the cities. The technology has been tested for a couple years now, linking many rural villages to state-of the-art hospitals in cities. Telemedicine is made possible by, "HealthSAT",a satellite. After the famous tsunami in 2004, medical consultation and relief were provided to people in remote parts of the country through mobile telemedicine units. However, just like many other innovations, there are a few glitches that need to be resolved before this technology is marketed globally.
