My name is Kristen and I'm a 4th year, Sixth College student who's interested in this course because it explores the past, present and future with developing countries, cultures and technology. How we (as developed countries) can help nudge developing countries along as well as how much or even questioning whether we should aid are important concepts that I believe the upcoming generations should be aware of. I studied abroad for 5-6 months mainly in Singapore and during that time visited several countries in Southeast Asia. I also have family members who live in different parts of Malaysia who are directly affected by lack of technology and/or corrupt governments (though probably more due to the latter of the two).

On another topic, I like arts, crafts, photography, food, reading and travel. I like to occasionally paint sweaters, sew clothing, make jewelry or play around on Photoshop. I want to travel the whole world and live in various countries for years at a time. I rarely get homesick and always like to see something new. Also, I really like languages; I would love to be fluent in Chinese, Japanese, Malay, and French, with more lanuages to follow if I could get those down.

Overall, whether or not we can or should "help" other countries, I guess I'd like to bring more awareness to people our age about what else is going on in the world. I think it's really important just to go through that process of broadening your mind in realizing that there is so much out there.

...and I like photographs. Did I mention that?

While I'd like to see how technology can be created and effectively implemented in developing areas, I'm also interested in the social and political effects of technology...basically, IS globalization good for everyone? I would say no, but what is the boundary between being invasive and being helpful? I think it's really important to realize that not everyone wants to be "Westernized" and that it's a bit arrogant to assume so.

Anyways, here are a couple website I personally find intriguing, in case any of you are bored!

This guys compiled what maybe photographs that changed the world. Pretty amazing.

Assignment #3: I'm interested in the South East-Asian Regions dealing with economic poverty, santitation, meeting basic needs and clearing up the political corruption that may bolster these situations. I'm hoping that technology can help clean up the dirty work in the government and lead to a better lifestyle for the people. Because of these areas of interest, I'm also interested in the implementation of such technologies that may develop and since a lot of it depends on the cost of the product, I'm interested in "simpler" technologies like the water wheel barrel.

As far as what I can contribute, I'm not strong in the technical side like an engineer, but I suppose I have enthusiasm and a good network in finding resources and connections. Also, I'd like to start up a magazine but that is still in discussion.
