Well-managed charity is great for relatively short-term relief, especially when the problem seems to preclude a local solution (lost everything to a disaster). The fish vs. fishing thing still stands, but a rod won't help someone too emaciated to pull a fish out of the water. The best charity efforts set up self-sustaining solutions, but inevitably work with the limited resources of a charity organization.

For-profit organizations have the potential to bring a lot more to the table. The trick is getting them to act both responsibly and with respect to the interest of others - not exactly the hallmarks of capitalism. Microfinance seems to work because it can establish sustainable improvements without competing directly with local ventures (save money lenders). However, I would imagine that kind of situation is unusual. Maybe the question becomes "How can you profit from making other people independent enough that they don't need you anymore?"
