1. The project description on the website says that the Social Design course will be taught remotely from Mumbai, India. So will we be focusing on India, or will we be looking at other underdeveloped countries?
While this class will discuss issues relating to many developing economies, this class will be naturally biased towards an examination of India. Papers and projects are free to examine issues in any developing country.

2. Also, we are expected to develop a technological solution and also develop an understanding for the developing countries. Will we be doing this with a business plan or a research paper? Basically what will be the end product for the course?
Students will be able to work in pairs on a final project, if they wish. However, by default, students will be required to write 2 papers. More information is available on the Assignments page

3. I'm not sure what you meant by engaging in a "technologically mediated educational experience". Can you give me more details about that?
I will be conducting this class from Mumbai, India. I will be communicating with the class via videochat software, IRC, this wiki, and other technologies. Additionally, I will be featuring guest lecturers from overseas. The internet will be as important to the conduct of this class as the room you will be sitting in. Distance education is considered one of the many benefits of ICT technology in the developing world, and we will be able to evaluate its strengths and weaknesses in this class--as well as refine a methodology for having remote education.

That said, much of the class experience will be based upon peer interaction and student led discussions, so don't worry about peering into a computer screen for too long.

4. How often and in what kind of setting will we be meeting?
We will be meeting once a week for ~3 hours in Atkinson Hall (AKA, Calit2, the new building by the Stone Bear). It will be in a big, naturally lit room with comfy chairs. :)

5. Will I have the opportunity to see a new technology develop, and assist in developing it?
The answer to this question depends upon your ambition! You will be exposed to the development processes of a range of technologies, including some that are in-process. You will have the ability to assist with these in-process projects, or work on a project developed by yourself and your peers. However, by default, students will be required to write 2 papers, one of which will involve design specification and advocacy.

6. Has this course been offered before, and if so what have past students achieved?
I taught a somewhat similar Social Design practicum in Spring 2007, but with an emphasis on role of architecture on social interactions on the UCSD campus. The class was called "social architectures," and students successfully completed a large number of projects, including tree swings, mobile benches, a large scale memorial, and a 2200sq ft experimental living space in the eucalyptus groves. the projects can be seen at www.socialarchitectures.com
