Long armed dude from Agra
Hello, I am a fourth year Computer Science student here at UCSD, hoping to finish up this spring. I have a strong interest in developing technologies as I believe many of these emerging markets will have a profound effect on the future of the global economy. The impact may not be readily apparent, but there is always a first step for something.
I spent 3 months of my summer living and working in India and saw first hand how technology on the other side of the world affects the everyday person. From the vegetable vendor at the local market displaying his Motorola RAZR with the newest Bollywood video so his customers can view it while they pick up his goods, to enabling fishermen with weather data so that they may not be stranded by sudden Monsoon squalls. For many, the mobile phone is the first peice of technology that they encounter with the power of telecommunications. I am interested in what other technologies can benefit these people, and what obstacles are there in bringing these technologies to the masses.

I can contribute by applying programming knowledge.

Here is an interesting article on the prospects of Android, and its potential impact on the mobile phone industry in the developing world:

The future might look something like this - Google will fund free incoming and outgoing calls, text messages and data packets through advertising!

Prepaid Earth Press release

This could potentially mean the subsidy of the phone would make phones available to nearly every single person. The Open-Source nature of the phone would also mean the applications that run the phones can be made and obtained at a very little cost - similar to what Linux did to the computing industry.
