There are 2 Main Assignments in this class:

Technology Analysis Paper
5-7 pages single spaced, to be done in pairs:
    • Choose a technology that is intended to have a positive impact on the development of society.
    • Describe the relevant social, economic, environmental and technological conditions of the region into which this technology has been deployed. What are the developmental needs of the region that this technology addresses?
    • Describe the design of the technology and the methodology for its development. Is the designeconomically, culturally, and environmentally sustainable?
    • Synthesizing your research, evaluate the technology and its design methodology. How has this technology changed society in a positive manner or contributed towards its development? Discuss recommendations for future design.


Design Development Paper
10-15 pages single spaced, to be done in groups of 2-3:
    • Choose a technology that you believe would contribute to development if introduced to a particular society
    • Describe the relevant social, economic, environmental and technological conditions of the region into which you would deploy this technology. What are the developmental needs of the region that this technology addresses?
    • Describe and specify your technology (with illustrations) and explain how its deployment could benefit the needs of this region
    • Describe the Design Methodology that should be used to develop and deploy this technology
OR

    Design Development Project
    3-5 pages single spaced, to be done in groups of 2-4:
      • Complete same steps as above
      • Develop a prototype of the design to show functionality and user-interaction
        • Prototype development can result in extra credit
      • Film this interaction and create 2-5 minute video

      OR

      Submit a business plan to the UCSD 50K competition

      Student Seminar Leaders
      Every student will act as the seminar leader for at least one session during the course. Students will choose one week within the semester to act as Seminar Leader. The responsibility of each week's seminar leader are as follows:
      1. Give a brief presentation on the reading
      2. Lead the structured class discussions taking place each class
      3. Write a brief summary of the discussions.
      4. Act as the local agent through the entire week,potentially to be called upon to gather materials from the library, makephotocopies, or assist with the video connection.
      Acting as seminar leader is worth 15% of a student's total grade.

      Grades will be calculated as following:
      Final Paper (20-25 pages) or Project: 25%
      Short Paper (10 pages): 15%
      Participation (Attendance, online engagement): 45%
      Seminar Leadership: 15%

      Extra Credit:
      Additional 2-3 page paper: 5%
      Additional Project: 5-10%
      Additional In-Class Presentation: 5%

      Note:
      Unless special arrangements are made in advance, late assignments will lose 5% of their grade a day and each missed class will cost 5% of a student's total grade.
